How the facts are checked
Every row on the board is a set of plain facts, each one taken from the app's own site, docs, download page, source code or release notes. The sources are listed at the bottom of each app's page.
What each column means
- Open source. The code that runs the service is public under an open licence. Open-source apps only, not open clients on a closed server.
- Hosting. How you can run it. Cloud means the makers host it and you sign up. Self-host means you can run your own copy on your own server and keep it running if the company disappears. Federated means separate servers talk to each other, like email. Decentralized means there is no central server at all.
- Encryption. What is protected and from whom. TLS means traffic is encrypted on the way to the server, but whoever runs the server can read it; every app here has at least that. E2EE (end-to-end encryption) means only the people in the conversation can read it, not the host. The board says which parts are end-to-end encrypted: voice, DMs, private rooms, or everything.
- Voice, video, threads. Built in, without a third-party bot or link out.
- Members pay. Whether the people joining your community have to pay anything to use it.
- Runs on. An official app for that platform that a member can install today. Crossed out means no app yet.
- Status. What the makers call it: stable, beta or alpha.
What ? means
Nobody has confirmed it either way. It is not a no. If you know, post the link.
No scores, on purpose
A single number hides the one fact that decides it for your server. The board shows the facts and leaves the weighing to you. Apps are listed alphabetically, with Discord on top for comparison.
Getting something fixed
Post on r/LeavingDiscord with the app and a link that shows the fact. Builders are welcome to submit their own app; say that it is yours.
I build Probed, one of the destinations here. It gets the same facts as the rest.
